If you’ve found something incorrect or out of date on your credit report, it might be time for some DIY. We’ve compiled a number of steps you can take to help correct inaccurate information and take charge of your credit reputation (without paying someone else to fix it!).

What kind of errors might there be on my credit report?

Some examples of errors you might find on your credit report include a misspelling of your name, the wrong address, or a credit listing which is incorrect, misleading or a duplicate.

How can I go about correcting information on my credit report?

  • Contact the credit provider and/or credit reporting body first and ask them to investigate and correct the specific inaccuracy. Tell them why you believe the information is incorrect – if you are unsure, ask them to explain why the information is on your report. Consumer safeguards in Australia require credit providers and credit reporting bodies to look into and respond to your correction requests.
  • If you have documents that may be relevant in showing the information on your credit report is incorrect, it may be beneficial to provide this early on in your dealings with your credit provider or credit reporting body.
  • If you need a hand with your correction request, you can make an appointment with a community legal centre who can help you with the process.
  • If neither the credit reporting body nor the credit provider can correct the listing, you can contact an independent dispute resolution scheme called an Ombudsman service. Examples of these services include the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS), the Credit and Investments Ombudsman Ltd (CIO), or the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO). What about credit repair companies?

Credit repair companies claim to be able to remove information from your credit report. It is important to note that in most cases, information can only be removed if proven incorrect. These companies generally charge high fees for a service that you can perform yourself for free.

Identity theft and credit reports

Incorrect listings on your credit report can also alert you to identity theft, where someone has used your identity to apply for credit. If you believe someone has stolen your identity and attempted to obtain credit in your name, you should immediately contact the credit reporting body, the relevant credit provider and the police so the issue can be investigated.

  1. Trying to get check done but saying incorrect information or typing error. I’ve entered my name,d.o.b,address,Medicare,email details etc. Also asks for drivers licence number,but my licence was suspended 16months ago but I still entered the number it was but no good. Need help. Cheers

      Hi Adrian,

      Thanks for getting in touch.

      A credit provider may record an enquiry on your credit file when you apply for a credit product. It is recorded on your file regardless of whether your application was approved or rejected. It does not indicate if the product was ever taken out, is still active or whether it has been paid off or not.

      Credit enquiries can stay on your credit file for five years and can only be removed if incorrect or out of date.

      • Ok so I have 2 loans taken out , one is a personal loan one is a master card that are upto to date , why is it that I have a low credit score if I’m doing everything right

          Hi Adrian,

          How enquiries affect your credit score depends on the frequency and recentness of the enquiries, the type of credit applied for and the provider of the credit.

          Historically, CRBs in Australia have not had access to your repayment history or balances so they haven’t been able to take this into account.

          Now the credit landscape is starting to change to focus more on rewarding good behaviour like paying your bills on time, however we’re still in a transition period and this will take some time to filter through.

          It is also worth noting that CRBs do not have visibility over your assets and are therefore unable to consider these in calculating your score.

  4. hi!
    i have just received my credit report from Veda and have some questions,

    in one report my date of birth is listed incorrect, my maiden name and previous address is also listed incorrect do i just ring Veda? will they just correct this or will it be removed completely?

    also why is there several sections listed as other?? in this section i have several debt collectors showing up several times a year each but there is nothing listed as too why, and also have a listing listed in the same section as Telstra consumer 5x on the same date…… does this affect my credit rating?
